Its structure combines a fatty hydrophobic chain with an ethoxylated, sulphated hydrophilic head, which is why it wets, emulsifies and foams so readily.<\/p>\n<p>Three properties matter when it is used in agricultural formulations.<\/p>\n<h2>Hard-water tolerance<\/h2>\n<p>Unlike simple soaps, AES keeps its performance in water with high calcium and magnesium content. Field water is rarely soft, so this is often the property that decides whether a tank mix stays uniform.<\/p>\n<h2>Foaming<\/h2>\n<p>AES foams readily and the foam is stable. In a spray tank that can be a nuisance, which is why an antifoam is often added alongside it; in a wetting or spreading adjuvant the same property can be useful.<\/p>\n<h2>Compatibility<\/h2>\n<p>AES combines well with non-ionic and amphoteric surfactants and with many anionic systems. It is less suitable in strongly acidic or strongly oxidising formulations, and it should not be mixed with cationic surfactants, where precipitation is likely.<\/p>\n<p>Typical commercial grades are supplied either as a viscous gel at 60\u201370% active content or as a pourable liquid at 23\u201330%.
